The Holy Water Font: An overlooked Objet d’Art in our churches?

Maria Cassar is a graduate in History of Art (Hons.) from the University of Malta and she looked at holy water fonts as the subejct of her undergraduate dissertation. She is currently reading for her M.A. in History of Art with a focus on the art of Willie Apap, 1950-1970.


Synopsis

This lecture traces the uses, rituals and symbolism associated with holy water and provides an artistic sketch of how basins and fonts developed over a period of two thousand years, with an emphasis on the European continent. The main part of the lecture will be devoted to the artistic development of basins and fonts studied in the Maltese Islands and will include a presentation of over 100 examples from local churches and chapels.
