Sinopsi

Fl-1812, waqt li Napuljun u l-Grande Armée kienu qed javvanzaw lejn, u jitilqu minn, Moska, l-uffiċjali tal-armata tal-Prussja kienu bdew jilagħbu Kriegspiel (logħob tal-gwerra), maħluqa biex jitħarrġu fil-professjoni militari tagħhom. Seklu u sena wara, l-awtur Herbert George Wells kiteb Little Wars, ktieb li jiddeskrivi kif tilgħab battalji bis-suldati taċ-ċomb, maħluqa għat-tfal u l-kbar. Mitt sena oħra, u fl-2023 il-kumpanija Ingliża Games Workshop iddikjarat profitt ta’ £83.6 miljun minn fuq il-logħob tagħha.

Fit-taħdita dwar il-logħob tal-gwerra (tabletop wargames), se tkun deskritta l-istorja fil-qosor ta’ dan it-tip ta’ logħob fejn jintużaw mapep, mudelli u tħaddim tal-moħħ; u kif dan il-logħob kellu, u għad għandu, rwol fl-edukazzjoni, l-istħarriġ, u bħala passatemp. Ser jintwerew ukoll xi eżempji ta’ logħob fejn l-azzjoni seħħet f’Malta, u xi ħsibijiet dwar kif setgħu jintisġu xenarji oħra li forsi joffru spunt għal dibattitu.

Synopsis

In 1812, while Napoleon and the Grande Armée were advancing towards, and departing from, Moscow, Prussian army officers had begun to play Kriegspiel (war games), created to introduce them to their military profession. A century and a year later, the author Herbert George Wells wrote Little Wars, a book describing how to play battles with lead soldiers, created for children and adults. Another hundred years, and in 2023 the British company Games Workshop declared a profit of £83.6 million from its games.

In the talk about tabletop wargames, the brief history of these games, which use maps, models, and brain operations, will be given. Furthermore, the lecture will discuss how these games have had, and still have, a role in education, surveys, and as a hobby. Some examples of games where the action took place in Malta will also be presented, while some thoughts on how other scenarios could have been woven, may perhaps offer a stimulus for debate.
